This review is from: Westinghouse #77021 3 Speed Fan Switch (Personal Computers) First, take a picture of the existing wiring or carefully write down which wires are connected to each of the four sockets in the switch. If you forgot, the convention for Home Depot fans is: Black (power) to L, Brown to 1, Purple to 2 and Gray to 3.Next, prepare four short wires carefully labelled as to color and corresponding socket. I used 18 gauge, but 16 would probably be better. Strip both ends and tin the switch end with solder. Next, before attempting to mount the switch in the fan, insert each wire in its socket. The push connections are not very robust and will break if you try to insert and remove a wire several times. Next, wrap electrical tape around the wires to keep them in the socket. Finally, get up on the ladder, mount the switch and attach the wires to the corresponding color on the fan. Good luck! Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
